KITCHEN

...the room? Where I was Queen? No longer there,

Mom says of college days. I watch her hands

punch down the risen dough. Shape loaves. Butter

the steaming heel for me. I watch four hands,

the clock’s and hers, never resting, changing

pork hock to soup, egg whites to snow, slicing

minutes to seconds, the loaf to a taste so vital

I hate to swallow it. Sacrifice

is on my tongue because she rose at six

to knead the bread, she’s touched that wooden spoon

so many times she’s in the spoon, the mixing bowl

slowly cracking. The walls and all this room

will crumble. Warning lapses in the clock—

a stillness in the hands I hate to watch.
